AUBURN (NEWS CENTER) -- Auburn police have charged an elementary school music teacher with unlawful sexual touching. James Raymond, 26, is accused of molesting a student.

Raymond has taught at both the Park Avenue Elementary School and the East Auburn Community School. The complaint about Raymond was received a week ago, and he was placed on administrative leave. Late Tuesday afternoon, Auburn police announced his arrest.

Sex charges dropped against Lehigh teacher

Sex charges have been dropped and the arrest has been expunged against a Lehigh Acres teacher.

Jason Laux, 24, of 133 Ocean Park Drive, Lehigh Acres, had been arrested November 9, 2006 and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation. He had been accused of sexual assault of a female student under 16 according to a Lee County Sheriff's office report.

The State Attorney's office reduced the charge to misdemeanor battery in January, according to court records. The misdemeanor charge has since been dropped. too.

The State Attorney's office alls ordered the Lee County Sheriff's Department to expunge all information concerning the arrest or criminal history record against Laux.

A 33-year-old history teacher at Dueitt Middle School in the Spring school district faces criminal charges after prosecutors accused her having had a sexual relationship with one of her students.

Alison Mosbeck is charged with three cases of sexual assault of a child and one case of an improper relationship between an educator and a student, said Harris County Assistant District Attorney Denise Oncken. She was arrested Friday.

She was in court Monday and ordered to have no contact with children 17 and younger, court staff said. She is free on $80,000 bail. Her next court date is scheduled for Nov. 29, court records show.

A former Lawrence teacher convicted of having sex with a male student has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which inhibited her judgment, a psychologist testified Monday afternoon.

The victim, who now is 16, also suffers from the disorder, according to testimony in Douglas County District Court during a sentencing hearing for Meredith L. Kane, 24. The hearing will continue Dec. 17.

Psychologist Bruce Cappo said Kane saw herself as someone who could help the student, who was having problems himself. It led to a consensual sexual relationship that began in August 2006 and lasted until it was discovered by officials in March.

TAMPA - Christina Lin Butler, the Middleton High School teacher accused of having sex with one of her 16-year-old special education students, has been hospitalized because of severe emotional distress, her attorney said Monday.

The attorney, Tom Fox, said Butler was directed to a local hospital by a private psychiatrist last week. Her condition stems from a "long-standing diagnosis," Fox said.

One teacher had a romantic relationship with two high school students then continued to pursue the students after they asked to be left alone. The teacher later lied about this on a job application.

Another teacher pleaded guilty to third-degree sodomy, a felony, after he was accused of having sex with a minor.

A female elementary school teacher had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student.

The three teachers were among 12 educators in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware counties investigated by the state Education Department from 2001 to 2005 for misconduct and questionable moral character, state Education Department records indicate.

These cases were part of a rising caseload of sexual and inappropriate relationships between educators and their students in New York and nationwide, according to hundreds of records obtained under the state Freedom of Information Law.

In all, 485 misconduct cases were reported in New York from 2001 to 2005, the most recent year for which data is available. Almost three in four involved sex or an inappropriate relationship. New York's figures were gathered as part of a seven-month investigation in which Associated Press reporters sought records on teacher discipline in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Across the country, sexual misconduct allegations led states to take action against the licenses of 2,570 educators from 2001 through 2005. That figure includes licenses that were revoked, denied and surrendered. Young people were victims in at least 69 percent of the cases, and the large majority of those were students.

THE OVERWHELMING majority of educators are as appalled and horrified at sexual misconduct-connected incidents in school as any parent or law enforcement official.

Cynics may dismiss teachers as overpaid layabouts only interested in long summer vacations. But if they spent any time in a classroom, they would know the truth: More than anything else, teachers care about providing children an education in the very best environment possible.

This is the main reason why reports of misconduct upset us so much -- with each shameful aberration comes media advice about how to safeguard children against sexual predators in the classroom. No professional wants his or her occupation tainted this way, and the aspersions cast on teaching have created a chasm of precaution between student and educator. Honest, trustworthy teachers can no longer put children's needs first. Now, they also must factor in how every action is perceived and how every sentence is interpreted. They must always, always be wary of giving the wrong impression.

This subtext of paranoia has eroded the student-teacher relationship. Today, it is dangerous to bond at all with any student for any reason. Veteran teachers routinely advise first-year educators to maintain a wider zone of personal space than they might normally think necessary. The rule of thumb is to keep an actual, physical distance from students (one colleague demands that students respect his "six-feet rule"). This makes some educators uncomfortable even walking around their own classrooms.

Tampa, Fl. - It's been a tough week for students at Middleton High School. Tuesday 33-year-old special education teacher Christina Butler was charged with having sex with a 16-year old student.

Then they found out a student who had tried to tell the principal about the relationship was suspended.

"I think she did the right thing to spread the rumors and do what she did," said Graze Avila, a sophomore at Middleton High.

Some students wonder if the teacher had sex with any other students. Tampa police say they aren't aware of any others.

But students at Middleton are also talking about another rumor involving students having sex at the school.

"There's this one little girl I ain't going to say no names they say she's having sex with everybody she meets and they videotaping it," said Vorinthia Baker, a junior at Middleton.

BRICKBATS: To all of us as a society, for allowing teacher sexual misconduct to go on practically unchecked.
Legal loopholes, fear of lawsuits and inattention have contributed to hundreds of kids a year becoming victims of sexual misconduct by teachers, according to a recent Associated Press study.
Some states check fingerprints against records in their own state - not FBI records - which leads them to miss offenders. Others only check for violations when teachers are hired, which means they miss veteran teachers who have violated the law.
"You can fingerprint them all you want, and nothing's going to come up," said John Seryak, a longtime Ohio middle school teacher who trains teachers to spot when a colleague is abusing kids.
Obviously, the vast majority of teachers are not doing this to kids. But one is too many. We must demand that our leaders do everything in their power to prevent sexual abuse by teachers.

Richard Cea, who taught at New Milford High School, was arrested last year after the mother of one of the teens reported her suspicions to authorities. He was sentenced Friday.

Prosecutors say he gave alcohol to two 15-year-old female students and had sex with them, and that he also photographed teen girls in the shower.

TAMPA -- Two students involved in the Middleton High School teacher sex scandal plan to sue the school district, said attorney Darryl Rouson.

Rouson hand-delivered a letter of intent to suit to school officials this afternoon in the case of 33-year-old special education teacher Christina Butler.

Butler is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student. Rouson represents both the boy and 15-year-old Shatavia Kendricks, a Middleton student who said she was suspended after she told school officials about the relationship.

"The school bears absolute responsibility," Rouson said. "They had some notice. They had a responsibility to conduct an investigation. I really think they missed the ball, they dropped the ball. It's a horrendous message to suspend somebody for trying to tell the truth."

Tampa - Shatavia Kendricks did exactly what school officials say students should do. She told the principal that 33-year-old Christina Butler, a teacher, was having sex with a student.

But instead of calling the police, the school suspended the girl for spreading rumors.

"I said, 'When we were in the class, she used to let him hold her cell phone and the keys to her car,'" Kendricks says.

And it was those keys that Tampa police say led to Butler's arrest Tuesday night. They discovered the relationship when they pulled over some kids in a blue Jeep. The Jeep belongs to Butler.

Now Butler faces a charge of felony lewd and lascivious battery after police say she admitted to having sex with the student no more than a dozen times.
